Highlights

  • See the ghats light up from the water, before the crowds
  • Morning rituals and bathing, explained as they happen
  • A quiet rowing boat, not a crowded motor launch
  • Chai on the steps to finish

What you will do

We meet before the city wakes up and board a wooden rowing boat. From the water you watch the ghats catch the first sun: people bathing, priests beginning the morning puja, washermen already at work. Shiva tells you what each ghat is and why people come here. Back on land we climb the steps for a hot chai.

Meeting point

Shiva picks you up at your hotel or guesthouse in Varanasi. Staying near the ghats, where cars cannot go? He meets you at the nearest landmark.

Good to know

  • From November to February mornings on the river are cold: bring a warm layer.
  • The ghats have steep steps.

Best for

First-timers, photographers, families with children who can sit still in a boat.

Meals and tips

Meals are never included, unless the page says so. Shiva can suggest where to eat, and you pay at the stall or restaurant.

Tips are optional. If a tip is useful, Shiva tells you where, how, when and how much, and only then. Nothing else is extra: everything not listed above is included in the price.
