Kashi Vishwanath Temple: a Practical Guide for Visitors

Kashi Vishwanath, the Golden Temple of Varanasi, is dedicated to Shiva and is one of the twelve jyotirlingas, the holiest Shiva shrines in India. A visit is easier when you know the rules before you reach the gate.

What you cannot bring

Phones, cameras, smartwatches, bags and many electronic items are not allowed inside. There are lockers near the entrances. Leave valuables at the hotel and bring only what you need: a little cash and your passport or ID.

Queues and the best time

Mondays, the month of Shravan (July to August) and Mahashivratri bring very long queues. Early mornings on other weekdays are usually calmer. The temple trust sells a paid fast-track entry (Sugam Darshan) through its official website; timings and prices change, so check them the week you go.

Dress and behaviour

  • Shoulders and knees covered; shoes off before entering.
  • Expect security checks at the gate.
  • Keep moving in the queue and follow the volunteers’ directions near the sanctum.

The corridor to the river

Since 2021 the Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor links the temple directly to the ghats, with wide courtyards where narrow lanes used to be. You can walk from the river up to the temple, or come through the old lanes of Vishwanath Gali for a sense of how it was.

Rules at the gates are updated often. Shiva checks them for you on the day and tells you what to leave behind.
