Where to Stay in Varanasi: Which Area Suits You
In Varanasi the area you sleep in changes the trip more than the hotel itself. A riverside room puts the ghats outside your window; a hotel in Cantonment gives you quiet and a car at the door. Here is how to choose.

On the river: the ghat-side havelis
Between Assi and Manikarnika, old palaces and guesthouses sit right above the ghats. You wake up to bells and boats, and the sunrise is a few steps away. The catch: cars cannot get there. You walk through the lanes with your luggage, often up and down stairs, so ask the hotel if a porter meets you at the nearest road.
Good for: travellers who want the atmosphere and do not mind steps. Less good for: people with reduced mobility or lots of luggage.
Dashashwamedh and Godowlia: the centre
The busiest part of town, a short walk from the main aarti, the Kashi Vishwanath temple and the old city markets. Everything is close, and nothing is quiet. Light sleepers should ask for a room away from the street.
Assi Ghat: calmer, with cafés
The southern end of the ghats is more relaxed, with cafés, yoga, and the morning programme on the ghat. It is about half an hour on foot along the river to Dashashwamedh, a nice walk at dawn or sunset. A good base for longer stays.
Cantonment and Nadesar: comfort and cars
The large hotels are here, closer to the railway station and the airport road. Rooms are modern and cars reach the door, which matters for families and older travellers. The ghats are 20 to 40 minutes away by car or rickshaw, depending on traffic.
Before you book, check
- Can a car or rickshaw reach the hotel, and how far is the walk with luggage?
- Is the river view real or partial? Ask for a photo from the room.
- Hot water and heating from December to February: mornings are cold.
- Airport or station pickup, and what it costs.
- Early check-in if your train arrives at dawn.
If you sleep far from the river, you can still see the sunrise: Shiva picks you up and you reach the ghats before first light.
